A massive new gym at Fort Liberty, North Carolina, has over 100 weight and cardio stations, a platoon-sized kitchen, and a digital shooting range — though it is open just to students and staff at the Army’s special operations training hub.

At $43 million, the Human Performance & Force Generation Training Center, or HP Forge, took three years to build and will be the fitness hub for the 1,000 or so students, instructors and staff at the Army’s John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School. The JFK center runs the training pipelines for the Army’s Green Berets, Civil Affairs, and psychological warfare troops.

“This all goes back to our first SOF Truth that humans are more important than hardware,” Lt. Col. Mike Handlan, the director of Human Performance and Wellness at the JFK school, told Task & Purpose in an email. “This is an example of investing in our people and ensuring they get the best possible training, both on and off the field.”

Developers shared the vision of the New Aloha Stadium Entertainment District, described as a mixed-use community development on Monday.

The plan is for the stadium to be built and ready for UH football season in 2028, but that can’t happen until the current Aloha Stadium is torn down.

“It will take 10 months to demolish the stadium, so we’re already working ahead on demolition plans as we speak,” said Stanford Carr, a developer on the project.

The developers’ goal is to begin demolition once the agreement is finalized this summer, meaning the existing stadium would be cleared by this time next year so construction on the new stadium could begin.

Progress is being made on the Altru Sports and Aquatics Complex in Grand Forks.

Right now, the total base project cost comes in about $6 million over budget at $115.9 million. However, the total cost of the project will likely change as bids come in and the design is finalized. Representatives from JLG Architects say there’s about $13 million worth of contingencies built into the plan.

The three main areas of the complex are aquatics, turf, and pickle ball. It will be located next to Hugo’s Raceway and the future Grand Forks Children’s Museum.
