The U.S. Soccer Federation and Home Depot held a ceremonial beam-raising at the site of the new National Soccer Training facility in Fayette County, Ga., on Tuesday.

Nearly a year after breaking ground on the $228 million facility, officials say the sprawling campus about 35 miles outside of Atlanta will be completed by April 2025 — shortly before the FIFA World Cup comes to the city.

“I think it’s going be the cathedral for the sport in this country,” said David Wright, the chief commercial officer for the U.S. Soccer Federation.

During Tuesday’s event, Home Depot and U.S. Soccer employees signed a beam that was hoisted atop the shell of what will become a 200,000-square-foot, high-performance facility housing locker rooms, meeting spaces and headquarters space for U.S. Soccer. [Atlanta News First]

Will Scarsdale build an indoor pool? After years of surveys, community feedback and public forums that was the question before the Scarsdale Board of Trustees at a work session on January 28, 2025. The time had come to move to schematic designs of the new facility to replace the obsolete pool complex that is overdue for an overhaul.

Before “diving in” to the four programmatic options, Village Trustee Karen Brew reviewed a summary of the most frequently heard public comments:

-The pool is a valued recreational hub and a community asset.

-Opinions were evenly divided between a year-round facility and maintaining the current set up.

-Requests for essential upgrade include better heating, improved filtration and enhanced accessibility.

-There was concern about pool shapes – i.e. dolphin design and their impact on functionality, safety and maintenance costs.

-Enhance the pools appeal with multipurpose spaces, recreational features and family-friendly amenities.

-Align project costs with realistic expectations, reduce non-essential features and ensure transparency in budgeting.

-Concerns about long term tax implications and financial sustainability.

-Membership decline attributed to competition from private pools and demographic shifts. [Scarsdale]

The City of Rochester has chosen the location to build a massive sports and recreation complex.

The Rochester City Council will be asked to vote on authorizing the city to begin final negotiations to buy the property. The outdoor facilities are set to be built first.

In 2023, Rochester voters approved extending the city’s sales tax to raise revenue for the sports complex along with street repair, flood mitigation control and housing.

$65 million of the sales tax revenue was earmarked for the sports complex. In August, the city selected three potential sites for the complex.

The sites selected were Badger Farms along Valleyhigh Dr. Northwest on the west edge of the city, Rochester West Campus at the former IBM site and the Seneca Foods Corporation property in Southeast Rochester next to Shoppes on Maine retail center.
