Construction on a practice facility for the Charlotte Hornets in Uptown has started as the ACC Tournament tips off on Tuesday.

It was supposed to be built at the transit center.

The buses would be in the basement and the Hornets practice facility would have been above it.

However, the Hornets got new leadership and development stalled.

They quickly pivoted to the back-up plan.

It will be built on a parking lot on North Caldwell Street between the Spectrum Center and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. The lot where it will be now is fenced off.

Plans call for a 100,000-square-foot practice facility plus 35,000 square feet of offices for the team. There will also be ground-level retail and a public plaza. [WSOC-TV]

The University of Utah Board of Trustees approved a motion to consider a proposal for the construction a new, multi-purpose arena in Salt Lake City on Tuesday morning.

It follows a broader initiative, titled the Campus Physical Development Framework, to expand the university from a commuter institution into a “destination campus” with increased on-campus student hubs, expanded housing and other residential areas.

The move would separate the U. into six different districts; an athletics district; a health district; a cultural district; a academic and research district; a research park district; and, finally, a “college town magic” district, which is where the Huntsman Center is currently located on the Fort Douglas property. The OKC City Council approved Flintco and Mortenson as the construction team for the new Oklahoma City Thunder Arena.

The arena will cost at least $900 million and cover 750,000 square feet in order to meet or exceed NBA standards. The old Cox Convention Center, now Prairie Surf Studios, will be demolished in the spring of 2025. Construction of the new arena will begin in 2026 and will be completed by 2028.

The project will create construction jobs, boost the local economy, and serve as a premier sports and entertainment venue for downtown OKC—all of which will have a positive effect on the local economy and contribute to community enrichment. [News 9]
