The Leonard J. Kaplan Center for Wellness represents an anchor point for the University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s continued expansion efforts. The facility is surrounded by student-focused spaces and housing that were a part of the recent Spartan Village development. The building unifies recreation in a central space, offering a variety of recreational opportunities under one roof.
The building’s form is driven by the functional organization of the spaces within. Spaces with a high degree of activity are located on the north side of the building to provide views both for users and those on the outside. Inside, the building is divided into three separate but highly transparent levels. Students enter at level two, which offers access to free-zone spaces such as intramural offices, classrooms and shared-use spaces. A control desk separates these spaces from the main fitness areas, five of seven gymnasium courts, a cycling room, racquetball courts, lounge areas, a table tennis and billiards area, and more.
Level one houses the remaining two courts, the natatorium, an outdoor adventures suite, climbing and bouldering walls and a significant outdoor sun deck and patio space.
Level three offers a 1?8-mile jogging track, multiple group exercise spaces, an outdoor rooftop exercise patio, additional weight training and fitness space, a mat room and the personal training suite.
