A quiet afternoon at the gym took an unexpected turn for Londonberry, N.H., Planet Fitness members on Wednesday when a man entered the gym, shot a gun and fled.
Members reported seeing staff run from the front desk and hide in the Black Card Member area. One woman told WCVB News that she originally thought the loud sound was from dropping weights, but when she saw the employees run, she realized what was going on.
The witness said, “And then right behind me is the employee room where the pop sound came from, so I ran over to the locker room, and I hid in one of the skinny lockers."
“I heard some yelling outside, and I didn’t think anything of it because you're just at the gym. And then I heard a really loud popping sound,” said another Planet Fitness member.
No one at the Planet Fitness was injured in the incident, and police were immediately called to the scene. However, the shooter had already fled the area. Londonberry police reported that they later caught up with the shooter in a nearby neighborhood. He exchanged fire with police and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the incident, WCVB reported that the man was “identified by investigators as Calvin M. Ly-Bishop, 23, formerly of Bedford, New Hampshire.”
CKO Kickboxing is the gym directly next door to Planet Fitness. Employees at CKO Kickboxing told CBS News that Planet Fitness members came next door to tell them what was going on, and they locked their doors, shutting down as a precaution.
Planet Fitness released a statement following the incident that said, “At Planet Fitness, the safety of our team members and members is our top priority. We can confirm that there were no injuries inside the club, and we are working with police as they continue their investigation."
The Planet Fitness Location remained closed for the remainder of Wednesday and all day Thursday while police continued their investigation.
