A football coach from West Monroe (La.) High School was arrested this week for cruelty to juveniles and second-degree battery. Cedric Goins Sr., was accused of putting a student-athlete in a chokehold and causing him to go unconscious.
According to The Ouachita Citizen, “Goins resigned from his position on Feb. 6,” following the incident.
The student-athlete involved and other witnesses told police that he entered Goins’ office to get food before that evening’s basketball game. Goins then reportedly told the student-athlete to put the food down and said, “Keep my name out of children’s conversations.”
According to KTVE, “Goins then allegedly turned the victim around and placed him in a chokehold. The victim reportedly went unconscious and woke up in Goins’s office.”
Goins was charged on Feb. 24 and booked at the Ouachita Correctional Center on a $40,000 bond. His first court date was Wednesday, and he is scheduled to appear before the court again in April.
West Monroe High School leadership has not released a statement on the incident at this time, but many parents and community members are eager for additional information. On a KTVE Facebook post about the incident, several parents in the comments section discussed the questions they still have about the incident.
