Back in 2017, a platform collapse at Vault PK in San Diego injured dozens of people, including several children, during the gym’s ‘Kid’s Night Out’ programming. Nearly eight years later, a jury has finally reached a verdict in the civil case that nine plaintiffs brought against Vault PK.
According to Fox5 San Diego, $1.26 million will be awarded to the plaintiffs. That money will come from three sources: Vault PK, San Diego Sports Entertainment and Metropolitan Transit System.
“MTS owned the building and leased it to San Diego Sports Entertainment, which then subleased a portion to Vault PK, who built the wooden platform without any inspections or permits,” reported Fox5 San Diego.
Underneath the several layers of overlapping ownership and leasing, the jury decided that San Diego Sports Entertainment was the most liable in this situation. That organization will pay 50% of the total, $630,000. Vault PK was 35% responsible for the accident, paying $441,000, and MTS was 15% responsible for the accident, paying $189,000.

The plaintiffs are receiving various amounts from the total $1.26 million depending on whether or not they testified in the hearing.
At the time of the incident, more than 20 children and a few adults were taken to the hospital for injuries resulting from the platform collapse. The ‘Kids Night Out’ event was open to children ages 5-14, and there were roughly 150 children present that night.
Vault PK has permanently closed since the 2017 incident, but when the gym was operating at full capacity it featured American Ninja Warrior-styled obstacle courses. There was a viewing platform where parents could observe the fun, and on that night in particular, Vault PK was serving pizza from the platform when it collapsed.
When the platform collapsed it also dismantled a wooden staircase, reportedly resulting in a heap of wood and bodies on the ground.
