A former Furman University student-athlete was arrested and charged this week on two counts of voyeurism and two counts of peeping tom, eavesdropping. Joshua Perry Harris previously played wide receiver from 2021 to 2024 at the university. Officials say he did not graduate and is no longer a student at the school.

However, that did not stop him from placing recording devices in a university bathroom and changing room, capturing footage of four unknowingly exposed people. The victims were identified as two men and two women.

According to WSPA.com, “A Furman spokesperson said they were following Title IX procedures and would not comment further on the case due to privacy laws.”

It is a sad turn of events for Harris who was previously a force to be reckoned with on the field, catching a career-high 116 passes during his time on the Furman University football team. And it is a sad pattern of inappropriate locker room behavior.

Back in August, charges were filed against a 50-year-old man caught recording patrons in a Lifetime Fitness locker room. In another instance, a youth swim coach was arrested in Arizona for voyeurism after recording videos in the girl’s locker room. These arrests and charges force facility owners and school officials to bring locker room safety to the top of the agenda.

As mobile devices and inconspicuous recording devices become more accessible, so does the risk of voyeurism in the locker room. Some private fitness facilities have attempted to update locker rooms to include surveillance cameras, but most of those attempts have been met with public outcry over privacy concerns. The problem isn’t a recent one, as laws like the Video Voyeurism Prevention Act date all the way back to 2004.

Harris has yet to appear in court for further information on bail and sentencing, and no date has been released to the public at this time.
