The Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association has suspended the Edmond North High School girls' wrestling team for the remainder of the 2025 season, reportedly due to the actions of one parent.

ā€œIn accordance with OSSAA Board Policy V, the girls wrestling program at Edmond North High School has been suspended for the remainder of the season following two egregious acts of unsportsmanlike conduct during two different wrestling events,ā€ the OSSAA said in a statement last week, as reported by The Ada News.

ā€œThis decision was made after the school received a formal warning following the first violation, as outlined in our policy. This policy has been in place for the past three years, and this is the first time we have had a team commit two egregious acts in the same season.ā€

Ada High School girls' basketball coach and athletic director Christie Jennings said sheā€™d hate to see something similar happen to one of the programs under her guidance.

ā€œThis is a reminder that OSSAA activity programs are primarily for the student participants. The purpose of the competition is to provide a positive learning experience and opportunities for the growth of our students. Our competitions are conducted according to the rules of the OSSAA,ā€ Jennings said in a press release, according to The Ada News sports editor Jeff Cali.

The Edmond North wrestling squad is ranked No. 3 in Class 6A.

ā€œEveryone including parents and spectators are expected to assist in the promotion and achievement of good sportsmanship,ā€ Jennings said. ā€œOne of their wrestlers was nationally ranked and was set to wrestle for her fourth state championship. Unfortunately, this teamā€™s season ended because a small set of fans/parents could not control their emotions.ā€

Jennings went on to say that Ada will have a no-tolerance policy for spectators who violate school policies and put Adaā€™s athletic teams in jeopardy of losing part of all of their sports seasons.

ā€œWe hope fans pack the stands to cheer on the Ada Cougars the rest of the school year, but please know our fans will be held to the same high standards that we expect from our athletes and coaches,ā€ the release said. ā€œWe will not hesitate to remove fans who act unruly or out of line. We should all have the same goal in mind ā€” to positively support our student-athletes so they can have the best experience possible.ā€
