Mike Gundy is facing his first losing season since 2005, his first year guiding the Oklahoma State University football program, and it appears his frustrations are starting to surface.
Following a 42-21 loss Saturday at home against Arizona State, the Cowboys' record dropped to 3-6 overall and 0-6 in the Big 12 Conference.
As reported by Athlon Sports, Gundy stated during his weekly press conference that people who criticize him are failures and struggle to provide for their families.
"In most cases, the people that are negative and voicing their own opinions are the same ones that can't pay their bills," Gundy said. "They are not taking care of themselves. They aren't taking care of their own family.
"They have an obligation to speak out and complain about others because it makes them feel better. But in the end, when they go to bed at night, they're the same failure that they were before saying anything negative about anybody else."
These comments have sparked outrage among fans on social media, with one stating, "Calling your own fan base poor losers is a bold strategy." Others called for Gundy's job. A fan commented that the coach's remarks demonstrate the university is a "joke" and lacking seriousness. Yet another suggested he'll let his money do most of his talking, posting, "Hey Mike, thanks for helping me to decide what bill to not pay next year. That season ticket renewal invoice is headed to the trash can."
Gundy is no stranger to controversy. In April 2020, he was compelled to apologize for comments he made about his players' resistence to the Corona virus.
