The 8,000-seat stadium will open three years sooner than anticipated.
Coming to Sherman High School as soon as Fall of 2026. This has been anticipated since the beginning. “When the high school was built, they actually put the footprint in place to come back and add the stadium, so this has been in the plans all along and we’re just able to bring them to fruition,” said the Sherman ISD superintendent, Dr. Thomas O’Neal.
A committee of students, parents, staff, and board members has been working to put this in place before 2030. “They went into design and then the bidding and the budgeting,” O’Neal said.
Monday night the board approved a maximum cost of $55 million to construct the stadium and related site improvements like parking. “With the increased bonding capacity that the district had, we were actually able to move that project up, save some inflation costs and actually get more of a stadium for our community than we would have been able to build in 2029,” said O’Neal. The Watertown School Board approved projects aimed at improving school facilities across the district.
The board addressed improvements to the Mellette Elementary gymnasium. The recommendation included using National Cooperative Purchasing in accordance with Johnson Controls under a social contract. The project, budgeted at $398,750, is part of the district's capital-level 5-year plan. The gymnasium update will primarily involve the replacement of existing unit ventilators with a new rooftop unit (RTU). This new unit will be positioned over the existing hallway outside the office area and ducted through the wall. [KXLG]
