The National Swimming Pool Foundation® recently decided to deep-six plans to update its Official Swimming Pool Design Compendium (the fourth edition was last published in 1997). Instead, the nonprofit organization has moved information from the publication to its newly redesigned web site under the "Resources" tab at nspf.org — allowing for immediate updates and free access. Created for professionals who design competitive pools, the online compendium provides links to guidelines and competitive rules from more than a dozen governing bodies. The "Resources" section also includes information about various training courses available and offers additional links to state health codes, material safety data sheets, and drowning and water-related injury references.

Any sports-related entity needs to promote itself. Joe Favorito — former vice president of public relations for the NBA's New York Knicks and now senior vice president of communications for the International Fight League — explains both why and how in Sports Publicity: A Practical Approach (Butterworth-Heinemann, softcover, $39.95). Part of the publisher's "Sport Management In Practice Series," it serves as both textbook and manual, featuring chapters on effective writing and speaking, staging press conferences, creating media kits, managing crises and working with members of the international media. Favorito presents multiple case studies and devotes special sections to blogs and viral video, and he provides numerous examples of press releases and advisories, media seating charts and special-event promotional pieces.
